FAER conducts workshop on
"Next Generation Mobile Operating System Android"
The Foundation for Advancement in Education and Research (FAER) in association with Integra Micro Systems (P) Ltd. (IMSPL) and Motorola planned and conducted a three day comprehensive workshop on "Next Generation Mobile Operating Systems" with a special emphasis on Google's Android platform. The workshop was conducted at M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT), Bangalore. The workshop is sponsored by FAER and executed by IMSPL and Motorola with significant logistics and co-ordination support from select staff and final semester students of MSRIT.
The participants included selected staff and students from varied engineering colleges in and around Bangalore City. The list of colleges includes Sir M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology (Sir MVIT), Sapthagiri College of Engineering (SCE), NITTE Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT), M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT), Reva Institute for Engineering and Technology Studies, Sambram Institute of Technology and Nagarajuna College of Engineering and Technology (NCET). The workshop registered overall 32 participants from all of the above mentioned colleges.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Aswatha Kumar M - Professor and Head of the Department, Information Science & Engineering, MSRIT. Dignitaries including Prof. D. K. Subramanian - (Dean and Professor (Retd.), Indian Institute of Science and President, FAER), Mr. Ram Sirupurapu - (Secretary, FAER and Executive Director, IMSPL) and Mr. M K Srikant - (CTO and Executive Director, IMSPL) were present at the inauguration of the workshop.
The workshop spanned across three days with in depth lectures from a wide panel of experienced IT professionals from Integra Micro Systems and Motorola.
The sessions commenced with an overall introduction to mobile operating systems and thereafter moved on to Android, which was the platform chosen for the case study. Sessions covered the Android development environment, design and development of phone based applications, details on creation of user interfaces, Android services, content providers, broadcast receivers, SQLLite database etc.
Motorola contributed on important topics such as Android APIs, Radio Interface layer and creation of location based services, which involve connecting to the Internet.
The workshop included a comprehensive hands-on training in the form of extended lab sessions conducted on all the three days. The lab sessions ensured familiarity with the development environment, creation of sample applications, deployment of these applications on actual devices, debugging and usage of other related tools.
The workshop concluded with a valedictory function in which Prof. K Rajanikanth - Principal, MSRIT, Dr. Aswatha Kumar M - Professor and Head of the Department, Information Science & Engineering, MSRIT, Dr. V Gopalakrishna - Director, IMSPL, Mr. Ram Sirupurapu – Secreatry, FAER and Mr. T. Shankar - Treasurer, FAER addressed the participants. The participants were encouraged to build on the learning gained from the Android workshop and to create winning solutions based on the Android platform. Each participant was awarded a participation certificate with a CD containing the theory and practical content of the 3 day workshop.
